Efficacy and claim support for skin care products

Skin care products represent the largest segment of the global beauty industry. There are a wide variety of care products for a wide variety of skin areas and conditions. The topics frequently covered include moisturizing, protection, and cleaning as well as ensuring and supporting skin renewal, maintaining a physiological pH, or restoring barrier properties. Often, product testing is done as a part of ‘use studies’ that can take anywhere from one day to several months, depending on the expected effect or claim. With a similarly wide variety of validated and objective testing methods, we can examine your skin care product in terms of efficacy and claims support.

Frequently investigated: the parameters of skin moisturization

Frequently, the proof of efficacy or claim support for skin care products is based on the investigation of the parameter of “skin moisturization”. We can perform the corresponding measurement of skin moisture in vivo using the classical method (corneometer) as well as by moisture mapping imaging. Furthermore, we can study the water content in the stratum corneum and the natural moisturizing factor, as well as determine the innovative parameter of “water mobility”. Our standard protocol for testing the skin moisturizing effect of a test product takes into account a two-week application period by 24 test subjects and measurement by corneometer under acclimated conditions. We are pleased to also offer you the investigation of the kinetics of skin moisture.

Anti-pollution efficacy

Consumers around the world are becoming increasingly aware of the many different forms of pollution (e.g., air, blue light, red light, etc.) and their negative health effects. Increasingly, this also affects the possible effects on the skin condition, coupled with the desire for the additional protection that “anti-pollution products” should deliver. With our new method for detecting anti-pollution detox effects, we can assist you, as a competent partner, in launching your product. After exposure to cigarette smoke, the protective effect is demonstrated on the basis of the parameter of squalene monohydroperoxide (SQQOH). If desired, malondialdehyde (MDA) can also be determined.

Efficacy Skin Microbiome

The microbiome is the totality of all microorganisms colonizing the human body, such as bacteria, microbes or viruses. Healthy human skin is characterized, depending on the area, by a very specific colonization. The ‘Shannon Index’ is considered a valid parameter which indicates the diversity and distribution of the different species. For each skin region with an individual microbiome, the following applies – the higher the Shannon Index, the more natural and healthier the skin flora.

Cosmetics manufacturers attempt to express the microbial neutrality of their products with claims like [MAINTAINS THE NATURAL SKIN FLORA]. Other producers pursue the objective of specifically and positively influencing a microbiome that has fallen out of balance.

With our newly-implemented “microbiome” method, we can conduct proof of efficacy or claim support. After standardized sampling, a microbial analysis is performed by sequencing the 16s rRNA gene. The study design depends primarily on the claim and the microbial parameters, and is therefore individually developed and tailored to your needs. In the analysis we can consider different strains – from phylum to genus. It is also possible to analyze specific species.
